Instruments for Obstetrics in Large Animals

The birth of, for example, a foal usually takes only about 30 minutes. Veterinarians only need to intervene if the birth does not progress normally. Reasons for a delayed birth include weak contractions, abnormal position, posture or orientation of the foal or calf, as well as twin pregnancies.

In large animal medicine, stable instruments are required for difficult births or the extraction of deceased fetuses. These include obstetric ropes and chains, as well as obstetric hooks.

Support Using Obstetric Rope or Chain

Normally, a foal or calf is born head and forelimbs first. Even in a correct position, a birth arrest or at least a significant slowdown can occur. In such cases, an obstetric rope or birth chain is looped around one or both forelimbs.

With the contractions of the mare or cow, a veterinarian can then apply a gentle pull caudally and ventrally. It is particularly important to pull carefully and not during the resting phases between contractions. The birth chain with 2 intermediate links from Hauptner & Herberholz is ideal for active obstetric assistance in large animals. It is attached over the fetlocks of calves or foals and, despite its firm hold, does not constrict.

The nylon obstetric rope is boilable and therefore represents a hygienic and suitable tool. The flat nylon obstetric rope is a safe alternative compared to conventional ropes, providing a firm pull without injuring the young animal's skin.

Blunt and Pointed Eye Hooks

Also included among the instruments for large animal obstetrics are blunt and pointed eye hooks. These are used for the correction of head malpositions and the fixation of the head during the extraction of fetuses. To reduce the risk of injury, the pointed hooks should only be used on deceased fetuses. Additionally, the pulling forces should only be applied to the limbs that are likewise secured.

The Harms Eye Hook is a birth hook used in large animal deliveries. It serves as an aid to correct head malpositions and to fix the head during extraction.
