Rumen Magnets for Cattle
It is not uncommon for animals, especially cows and cattle, to accidentally ingest metallic foreign objects such as nails, pieces of wire, parts of tin cans, ballpoint pens, or screws while grazing in pastures or feeding in barns.
However, particularly sharp or pointed foreign objects can cause severe internal injuries, infections, and inflammation of the animal's stomach, resulting in long-term harm. To avoid a surgical foreign body removal or a diagnostic laparotomy, a conservative therapy using rumen magnets is usually initiated first.
For example, the Kerbl green rumen magnet is typically applied prophylactically into the cow's stomach and secured in place. It attracts metal immediately after ingestion, collects foreign objects, and prevents perforation of the stomach wall.
Models such as the Rumen Magnet Forte, equipped with a strong active ferrite magnet system, are often used as a treatment option. It is applied and fixed inside the stomach after the metallic object has already reached the cow's stomach. There, it securely collects the object and prevents it from moving further into the abdominal cavity. Thanks to its high magnetic attraction, this magnet can even remove foreign objects embedded in the stomach wall.
The Working Principle of the Magnets
Conventional rumen magnets are all constructed according to the same principle. They are usually about ten centimetres long with a diameter of 35 millimetres. To ensure that the magnet not only attracts but also safely retains the collected foreign objects, it is encased in a plastic cage. The special design with internally positioned magnets also ensures safe passage and excretion of the rumen magnet.
For the treatment of recent foreign body ingestions, there are even models with extra strong magnetic power and holding force, such as the Kerbl Rumen Magnet Fortissimo. The neodymium magnet with exceptionally high attraction can be used both for prevention and for the treatment of metallic objects already embedded in the stomach wall of cows and cattle. Thanks to its large internal space, the Fortissimo magnet offers enhanced effectiveness in retaining foreign objects.
Quick and Safe Use in Ruminants
Thanks to the similar size of the magnets, standard bolus and rumen magnet applicators can be used. These have an internal diameter of 36 millimetres, rounded edges, and are made from high-quality stainless steel.
A one-handed operation allows simultaneous fixation and application, making handling easier. The Kerbl applicator for inserting a bolus or cow magnet is made from durable stainless steel and is available in lengths of 53 cm or 70 cm.
