Lab Stirrers
Lab Stirrers to Blend and Mix Liquids
Lab stirrers are used for the blending, stirring and mixing of liquids or liquid probes. The roller mixer allows for a particularly gentle mixing procedure, while magnetic stirrers and vortex mixers are more powerful.
Roller Mixers, Magnetic Stirrers and Vortex Mixers for Your Lab
Depending on the probes or liquids, different mixing intensities are required. The roller mixer, for example, blends particularly gently. It can be used in medical labs to gently and evenly mix blood samples with whole blood.
The magnetic stirrer is generally used for more powerful mixing procedures. It is characterised by a heated surface made of metal or ceramic under which a magnet is mounted.
This magnet rotates with constant speed, moving the magnetic stir bar, which has been added to the liquid probe. In general, a stir bar is a cylindrical bar with a glass or polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) coating. This PTFE coating makes the stir bar resistant against chemicals and temperatures up to ca. 250°C.
The RPM range of most magnetic stirrers can be adjusted manually and is monitored via a digital controller. Some models are even equipped with timers that stop at a preset time or heating modes to maintain a constant heat while mixing.
Vortex mixers are preferred if a sample needs to be stirred in a particularly forceful manner. The test tube shaker can be set to different speeds to shake the probes at up to ca. 3000 RPM (revolutions per minute). Depending on the attachment, the vortex mixer can be used for a wide range of probes and vessels, e.g. for Eppendorf tubes, Erlenmeyer flasks, test tubes and microtitre plates.
