"Silk", Black Silk
"Silk" by SMI is a tested non-absorbable suture made from braided natural silk fibres. Silk is obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm and is braided into an even thread which is waxed and coated with silicone. "Silk" has naturally high sliding properties through tissue, which are increased by waxing and the silicone coating. "Silk" has a minimal sawing effect and tissue drag.
The black silk is not absorbed by the tissue and, over a period of about 2 years, it is gradually encapsulated in fibrous connective tissue; however, the tissue only has a low reaction. "Silk" is a popular choice for its tensile strength, excellent knot security and increased tissue support (up to 3 months).
