Infusions and Transfusions
An infusion is a continuous administration of liquid, which is mostly done intravenously that is, through a vein. If blood elements are being administered, then this is referred to as a transfusion. Infusions are done for a number of reasons, e.g. for volume replacement therapy or parenteral medication administration. Even parenteral nutrition can be carried out through an infusion.
One differentiates between various infusion procedures depending on the type of application:
Intravenous infusion makes it possible to administer larger volumes of liquid directly into a vein. One differentiates between peripheral application (often using an IV catheter) and central application (e.g. with a port system).
For subcutaneous infusion, the IV catheter is placed under the skin and the liquid is lead into the subcutaneous skin. This infusion method is mostly used for balancing a liquid insufficiency in patients. The advantage is that the body will only absorb as much liquid as it needs and as much as it can handle. Subcutaneous infusion is especially useful in geriatric and palliative care.
Intraosseous infusion administers liquids into the bones e.g., in order to wash bacteria out of the bone or in emergency situations to provide extremely fast administration of life-saving medication. Because the peripheral blood vessels tighten when in shock, intravenous infusion is not always possible with emergency patients. Therefore, intraosseous infusion by means of puncturing the tibia with a special needle is often practiced.

In our category «Infusions/Transfusions», we offer you a wide selection of products for infusion therapy and for transfusion. Here you will find infusion sets like the Intrafix Air P, as well as Heidelberger extensions, infusion filters, transfusion sets and injection cushions. In order to provide sufficient height difference between the patient's arm and the infusion solution during gravity infusions, the infusion bottles are typically hung on drip stands.
