Twitch
This twitch made of wood and a braided loop is used to restrain horses during basic veterinary treatments. It is mainly used in horse clinics in lieu of tranquilizers to keep horses still and quiet during treatments. When used correctly, it is a practical and at the same tim gentle sedative measure for short-term treatments - for example, during joint anaesthesia or wound treatment.
When the twitch is applied correctly to the horse's upper lip, endorphins are released. This helps to calm the horse by inhibiting pain. In most cases the horse appears to enter a trance-like state and stands still.
The robust and ergonomic wooden handle offers safe and durable use. The tear-resistant cord of the twitch is robust and resistant to liquids and dirt. To meet the hygienic requirements of a veterinary practice, the twitch can be cleaned and disinfected after each patient in order to avoid cross-contamination and the spread of potential germs.
In addition, the twitch can be operated with one hand, so that the horse can also be secured at the halter with the other hand. This ensures that the horse can be held in a controlled manner even in difficult situations.

To use the twitch, grasp the horse’s top lip and slip the loop onto the lip. Twist the end of the handle with your other hand until the rope is snugly fitted and the lip is just beginning to elongate under the pressure and the horse is standing still. It is possible to overtighten the twitch therefore, if signs of loss of blood supply or pain are observed, the twitch should be loosened until these signs stop. The twitch should not be in place for any longer than 5 minutes. When the procedure is finished the twitch is released and pulled off the nose. The nose should be massaged after withdrawal of the twitch.
